New Delhi:

Uttar Pradesh State Archaeological Department (UPSAD) officials have unearthed a 42-feet-long and 11-feet wide boat in Lucknow during an excavation drive at Lucknow’s 220-year old Chhatar Manzil. This was the palace for the rulers of Awadh and their wives. As of now, UPSAD officials are searching for reasons how the boat got buried under the ground.

"How this boat got buried is still a mystery. We are yet to find out if it was due to floods or some other reason," Hindustan Times quoted AK Singh additional UPSAD director as saying.

A partially visible wooden structure was first seen by excavators from Uttar Pradesh’s Rajkiya Nirman Nigam construction agency.

Standing on the banks of the River Gomti, it was constructed by order of Nawab Ghazi Uddin Haider and completed after his death by his successor, Nawab Nasir Uddin Haider.

The Palace has gone through many owners including the Nawabs of Awadh Saadat Ali Khan and Wajid Ali Shah, and the British and changes since its construction was started in the 1780s.

It served as a palace for the rulers of Awadh and their wives. Later during the Revolt of 1857 the building became a stronghold of the Indian revolutionaries.
