The Muslim community in the Northeast state of Nagaland on Saturday celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr with great fervour and gaiety, marking the culmination of the Holy Month of Ramadan.

Thousands of people offered Namaz at Eidgahs in Christian-dominated Kohima and Dimapur, sources said.

Besides exchanging gifts with near and dear ones, they also gave alms to the poor, the sources added.

Greeting the state on the occasion, Governor P B Acharya expressed the hope that the occasion will usher in goodwill and harmony.

"The festival of Eid-ul-Fitr marks the culmination of the Holy Month of Ramadan, the month of prayers, blessings and forgiveness. It reminds every member of the community their obligations and responsibilities towards other members of the society, especially the poor and downtrodden for peaceful coexistence and equitable progress of the state and the nation," the governor said in his message to the people in the state.
