Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday appointed Neeraj Kundan as the president of National Student Union of India (NSUI). "Congress president Rahul Gandhi has appointed Neeraj Kundan as the new president of the National Student Union of India (NSUI) with immediate effect," reads a communique released by the Congress party. 

Earlier on February 7, Kundan was appointed as a member of the campaign committee for the upcoming Lok Sabha election. "Thanks to Shri Rahul Gandhi G and sh.@GAMIR_INC G for appointing me as member for campaign committee in upcoming Lok Sabha elections !!," he had tweeted. 

Kundan, who hails from Arnia Constituency Bishnah of Jammu District, has done B.A. LLB from the Law School University of Jammu. He started his political career a student activist was initially appointed as president of the Law School. In 2013, he contested NSUI Internal organizational elections and became State president NSUI of Jammu & Kashmir.

Neeraj Kundan was among top seven who were shortlisted in the final round for national president NSUI in the year 2017.

The post had fallen vacant after Fairoz Khan had resigned because of allegations of sexual harassment against him. “NSUI national president voluntarily resigned from his position for the goodwill of his party. The allegations being levelled against him are false and he will now go to the court and prove himself,” NSUI national secretary Saimon Farooqui had said.

An NSUI office bearer from Chhattisgarh had levelled charges of sexual harassment against Fairoz Khan following which a panel was formed to probe the allegations.
