India’s apex court on Thursday set up a three-member special investigation team (SIT) to probe into 1984 anti-sikh riot cases. The SIT will be headed by the former Delhi High Court judge Justice S N Dhingra. It will investigate into 186 cases in which closure reports were filed earlier. Besides Justice Dhingra, Abhishek Dular, an IPS officer of Himachal Pradesh cadre and a retired IG rank officer Rajdeep Singh will be other members of the SIT. It will submit its report in two months. Justice Dhingra had dealt with several high-profile cases including the 2001 Parliament Attack case as trial judge. He was recently in news for heading a one-man panel that probed Haryana land scam allegedly involving Robert Vadra. The matter will come up on hearing on March 19. The Supreme Court court on Wednesday held that the previous SIT had not carried out further probe into these 186 cases in which closure reports were filed. On October 31, 1984, riots had broken out in New Delhi after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by two Sikh security guards. According to reports, the violence had claimed around 2,733 live in Delhi.
