New Delhi:

Nirmala Sitharaman will take charge as the Union Defence Minister on Wednesday. She was one of the biggest gainers in the Cabinet reshuffle that took place on Sunday.

Sitharaman, who was holding the Commerce portfolio (Independent charge), was on Sunday promoted to the Cabinet rank.

Newly appointed Defence Minister on Sunday acknowledged her new job as a big responsibility, saying that she has to prove and perform to satisfy the goals which are expected from her.

“Have to prove and perform to satisfy the goals which are expected of me. In all probability, it (taking charge) will be on Sept 6,” Sitharaman said.

Sitharaman also highlighted the importance of women empowerment in the Modi cabinet.

While talking to ANI, Sitharaman said that the most important thing is that there are two women-She and Sushma Swaraj- in the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS).

With Sitharaman being promoted as the Defence Minister, she has now become the second woman to take charge of the crucial Defence Ministry after Indira Gandhi. But, she will be the first woman to take the complete responsibility of the department.

Indira Gandhi was the first woman to serve the position of Defence Minister but she had Defence Ministry as additional incharge while holding the post of Prime Minister in 1975 and 1980-1982.
