National People's Party (NPP) president Conrad Sangma will be sworn in as chief minister of Meghalaya on March 6, there will be no Deputy CM. BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced after Mr Sangma staked claim to form the government and received an invite. After meeting Governor Ganga Prasad on Sunday, Mr Sangma underlined that "it's not about being single largest, it's about having the majority". Mr Sarma said the BJP-backed coalition would have 34 lawmakers.

Sangma staked a claim to form the the Meghalaya government on Sunday, after cobbling together an alliance with an independent MLA, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the United Democratic Party (UDP), the People's Democratic Front (PDF), and the Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP). The coalition has 34 lawmakers, two more than the number needed to cross the halfway mark in the 60-member assembly.

About Conrad Sangma:

# Sangma is the son of former Chief Minister of Meghalaya and Speaker of the Lok Sabha, of Purno Agitok Sangma.

# In 2008, he became the youngest Finance Minister of Meghalaya. He is currently Member of parliament, Lok Sabha from Tura Parliamentary constituency.

# As a state minister, Sangma held the finance, power and tourism portfolios between 2008 and 2009.

# He has served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Meghalaya Assembly from 2009 to 2013.

# He has done BBA (Entrepreneurial Management) and MBA (Finance). He is married to Mehtab Agitok Sangma, and has a daughter.
