New Delhi :

Fairoz Khan, president of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) – students wing of the Congress party, has resigned from his post following sexual harassment allegations by a party worker from Chhattisgarh.

The resignation of Khan, which was submitted on Monday evening, had been accepted by Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

A Congress worker from Chhattisgarh had alleged that Khan had sexually assaulted her and her sister and a few other women from the party. She had also lodged a police complaint against him at the Parliament Street police station in September.

The NSUI national president, who hails from Jammu and Kashmir, has denied that charges of sexual harassment against him and said that he stepped down keeping in mind the party’s interests.

Following the woman’s complaint, the Congress party had also constituted a three-member committee to look into the matter.

The Congress was under pressure to take action against Khan as it was demanded the resignation of BJP leader and junior External Affairs Minister MJ Akbar, who is also facing the similar allegations.
