Police constable, gangster killed in encounter in Uttar Pradesh's Amroha

A 26-year-old police constable and an alleged gangster were killed in an encounter in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district on Sunday, the police said. A team of police had gone to arrest Shivavtar alias Shivia, a notorious gangster with over a dozen criminal cases. The police asked him to surrender but he opened fire, prompting them to retaliate. In the exchange of fire, constable Harsh Chaudhary was hit on chest and succumbed to the injuries during the treatment. Shivia was also shot in the encounter and later died in the hospital.

“At about 7-8 in the evening on the basis of specific information, a police team went to a tube-well located in Bachhraon area in search of a wanted criminal Shivavtar who has 19 criminal cases against him. When police asked him to surrender, he fired on the police party in which one of our constables Harsh Chaudhary sustained bullet injury and was immediately rushed to the hospital where he died during the treatment,” ANI quoted Anand Kumar, Aditional Director General (ADG), Law and Order.

Chaudhary, a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district, had joined the Police in 2016. He will be given a state funeral. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced Rs 40 lakh to the wife and Rs 10 lakh to the parents of Chaudhary. A government job will also be offered to one of his able family members.

The encounters in are on the rise in Uttar Pradesh ever since the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government has come to the power. At least 78 alleged criminals have been killed in as many as 3,000 encounters during the Yogi government. Also, seven policemen, including Harsh Chaudhary, have lost their lives while discharging their duties.
