The Supreme Court by a majority verdict has set aside the practice of divorce through instant triple talaq among Muslims, saying that it was void, illegal and unconstitutional.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that judgment of the Supreme Court on Triple Talaq is historic. It grants equality to Muslim women and is a powerful measure for women empowerment. 

This historic decision of the court was welcomed by politicians of different spectrum. Let's see reactions of some of the politicos.

The Uttar Pradesh government welcomed the Supreme Court's judgment on triple talaq, saying it will strengthen the secular foundation of the country.

"The Supreme Court's decision is historic. India is a secular country, but its definition was distorted on religious grounds. Now, the SC has termed triple talaq as unconstitutional," state health minister and government spokesman Sidharth Nath Singh said.

"The BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were of the view that discrimination should not be on the basis of gender and have advocated for gender equality," the minister said.

"The decision will strengthen the secular foundation of our country," he said.
Uttar Pradesh minister Anupama Jaiswal thanked the prime minister for "standing in support of our Muslim sisters in their fight for their rights".

It's a good judgement and its another step towards gender justice and gender equality, said Maneka Gandhi, Union Minister.

Welcome SC 's judgement, request Central Govt to bring in a legislation soon, said MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan. 

Asaduddin Owaisi, President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) said "We have to respect the judgement. It is going to be a great herculean task to implement this on ground"
