New Delhi, News Nation Bureau | Updated : 16 December 2017, 12:57 PM

Rahul Gandhi on Saturday will take charge as President of the Indian National Congress, country’s oldest political party struggling for its revival.

Rahul will be the 60th President of the Congress party since its establishment in 1985 and sixth member of Nehru-Gandhi family to hold the post.

He will take over his mother Sonia Gandhi after being elected to the post of party president earlier this month.

Sonia Gandhi led the Congress party for nearly 20 years. She took over the charge in 1998, seven years after the assassination of her husband and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s elevation, large hoardings and posters were put up in the area around Congress Headquarters in Delhi.

Rahul Gandhi was the vice president of the party and was elected unopposed for the top job.

A day before Rahul Gandhi’s elevation as party President, Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi on Friday had said, "it is time for me to retire now."

However, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala made it clear that she has retired only as party President and not from politics.

Here are the live udpates on Rahul Gandhi's elevation:
