SP elects Akhilesh as national president for 5-year term in absence of Mulayam

On the proposal of Ramgopal Yadav, Akhilesh Yadav was on Thursday elected as national president for five-year term. Akhilesh was elected unopposed.

The party's constitution was amended to extend the tenure of the party chief to five years from the existing three years.

Now that 44-year-old Akhilesh will remain at the helm for five years, the 2019 Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections in2022 will be held under his presidentship.

Samajwadi Party held its national convention in Taj city of Agra in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.

Akhilesh also called on his father to attend the national convention. It was expected that Mulayam would forget all the differences with son and join the national convention. But, he didn't attend the national convention.

The meeting took place at the Central Telegraph ground in Agra Cantonment which is a favourite location of Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Around 25,000 party activists from 25 states were expected to attend the convention.
