In a shameful incident for our country, a 58-year-old woman on Sunday died of hunger in Dumri area of Jharkhand’s Giridih district. The deceased Savitri Devi was hungry for the last three days.
Dumri MO Sheetal Prasad alleged that Savitri Devi was not getting ration as her ration card could not be made due to the negligence of authorities which led to her death due to starvation.
“Due to the negligence of authorities, her ration card could not be made, which is why she was unable to get the ration. Action will be taken against the culprits," ANI quoted Prasad as saying.
Saraswati Devi, the daughter-in-law of Savitri said that they made multiple requests for the ration card their requests but their voices fell to deaf ears.
"She had not got food since three days. They were only able to eat after begging people for food. Request for ration card was made a number of times but no one paid heed," the agency quoted Saraswati as saying.
Reacting to the incident, Dumri MLA Jagarnath Mahato also held authorities responsible for the Savitri’s death due to hunger and said that he will raise the issue in the state assembly.
“It was due to the negligence of officials that the woman died. The matter was of great concern. I would raise it in the state assembly,” Mahato said.
This was not the first case of starvation death in BJP ruled Jharkhand. Earlier in October 2017, an 11-year-old girl in Simdega district had died of starvation after authorities cancelled her family’s ration card as it was not linked to their Aadhaar card.
The little Santoshi Kumari was hungry for eight days before she died. However, Raghubar Das-led Jharkhand government did not learn any lessons from it and Savitri Devi became the latest victim of its insensitivity.
