Snub for Narendra Modi? How Raj Thackeray’s son’s wedding may be a ‘Modi-mukt’ affair

New Delhi:

Mumbai will witness another high-profile wedding when Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray’s son Amit will marry Mitali Borude, the daughter of a well-known physician, Dr Sanjay Borude on January 27. Leaders from across party lines have been invited for the wedding, which is scheduled at Lower Parel’s St Regis. Thackeray also visited his estranged cousin brother Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on January 5 to personally invite him for the wedding. According to the Hindustan Times report, the MNS president has not invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as of now.

The report said that Thackeray had sent his two aides to Delhi for inviting key political leaders. Among those who have been invited include Rahul Gandhi, LK Advani and ministers of the Narendra Modi government. The report said that last year, when quizzed about invitation to PM Modi, Thackeray had quipped, “Does Modi believe in the institution of marriage?”

Once an ardent supporter, Thackeray has turned into a bitter detractor of PM Modi. In March last year, the MNS chief launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led NDA government. He had also called for Opposition unity and a "Modi-mukt Bharat" by 2019.

Addressing party workers at a rally at Shivaji Park in central Mumbai, Thackeray had said, "The country is fed up with the false promises made by (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi and his government." All Opposition parties should come together to get rid of the BJP-led NDA government to ensure a "Modi-mukt Bharat", he had said, while reminding the audience of the BJP's "Congress-mukt Bharat" slogan.

"India got its first Independence in 1947, second in 1977 (after the post-Emergency election) and 2019 can bring a third independence if India becomes Modi-mukt," the MNS chief had said. If the Modi government was ousted and an inquiry was ordered into demonetisation, it (the note ban) might turn out to be the biggest scam in the country since 1947, he had said. Quoting an ISRO report, Thackeray had said, "A large-scale desertification of Maharashtra is going on due to depletion of groundwater. After Rajasthan, our state has reported the second highest rate of desertification in the country."
