Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik wrote to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, urging to change the name of Sultanpur district to Kush Bhawanpur. Maneka Gandhi will fight from Sultanpur in the Lok Sabha elections 2019. The seat is represented by her son, Varun Gandhi, who will contest from Pilibhit in the Lok Sabha polls.
With less than two weeks left for the Lok Sabha elections, Union minister Maneka began her campaign Sultanpur, the place where she began political journey on Saturday.
Last year, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Lambhua constituency Devmani Dwivedi tabled a proposal in the Uttar Pradesh assembly demanding that the Sultanpur district be renamed as Kush Bhawanpur. He had claimed that the name of the district was changed after Allauddin Khilji who was an invader and it should be rechristened to honour Lord Ram's son Kush.
While the history of the place could not be independently verified, the Sultanpur district website also refers to the same incident. Quoting the Uttar Pradesh District Gazetteers, 1982, it says that “about 750 years ago, it is said, two brothers, Sayid Muhammad and Sayid Ala-ud-Din, horse dealers by profession, visited eastern Avadh and offered some horses for sale to Bhar chieftains of Kushabhawanpur, who seized the horses and put the two brothers to death.”
Yogi Adityanath has made three big name changes in the state since forming his government in March 2017. While Allahabad became Prayagraj, Farah Town station near Mathura and Mughalsarai junction were earlier renamed after Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh ideologue Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya.
