New Delhi :
Despite protests by the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Karnataka government on Saturday celebrated Tipu Sultan Jayanti amid tight security. The BJP had staged protests across the state over the birth anniversary celebrations of Tipu Sultan - the 18th-century ruler of Mysore kingdom. In wake of the shutdown called by the various right-wing organisations, including the BJP and Codava National Council, security has been tightened in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Kodagu and Madikeri. The police have also detained several people protesting against the Tipu Jayanti Celebrations.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy has decided to skip Saturday’s events to celebrate the Tipu Jayanti. The event will be launched by Deputy Chief Minister and Congress leader G Parameshwara. “On the advice of doctors, the chief minister will take three days rest till November 11. He will spend time with family on these days and there will be no official engagements on these days,” a statement from Kumaraswamy’s office said.
