Nishikant Dubey, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Jharkhand's Godda, courted controversy by allowing a local party worker to wash his feet and then drink the same water during a party event on Sunday. A video of the incident shared by news agency ANI went viral on social media with people criticising the BJP leader and demanding his apology.
In the video, BJP worker Pawan Shah is seen cleaning the feet of the BJP MP. He later wiped them from a cloth and drunk the same water amid loud cheer from the audience and a smile from Dubey.

The Godda BJP MP shared the picture of the incident on Facebook and said he would also like to drink the ‘charanamrit’ (feet-washed water) of a worker. Dubey later justified the act of the BJP MP by citing the mythological example of Sudama, who washed the feet of Lord Krishna.
“If a party worker washes the feet out of happiness, what is amazing in it. Washing the feet of the guests is a customary practice in Jharkhand,” Dubey said.
People, however, didn’t approve the act and criticised the BJP MP for allowing the worker to drink the water used to wash his feet and asked him to apologise.
“You might be a parliamentarian but such acts can’t be adorned. You should apologise for this,” one of the Facebook users commented on Dubey’s post.
Meanwhile, the party worker who washed Dubey’s feet and drunk the water said this wasn’t a crime but his sentiment, therefore, should not be politicised.
“This should not be politicized, what crime did I commit if I washed his feet &drank water? It was my sentiment. He is like my elder brother. Will file case against all those slandering me,” Shah said.
