Mohammad Aziz: The voice behind Amitabh Bachchan, Govinda, Rishi Kapoor hit songs

He lit up the night and enthralled the crowd with his voice and music in his home state West Bengal just before he bid adieu to the world. Mohammad Aziz, veteran playback singer, who delivered some major hit songs in the 80’s and 90’s, breathed his last on Tuesday, leaving behind a music legacy which he showcased at several shows in Kolkata and in Northeast states during his last days.  

Aziz’s popular hits included "Teri Bewafai Ka Shikwa Ram", "My Name Is lakhan”, “Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka”, “Aap Ke Aa Jane Se”, “Main Teri Mohabbat Main” and “Dil Le Gayi Teri Bindiya”. He, however, first made his mark in the film and music industry with Jyoti, a Bengali film. A versatile artiste, Aziz was a playback singer not only in Bengali films, but also in Bollywood and Odia films. After Jyoti, he debuted in Hindi film Ambar in 1984. Since then, he had come a long way from Ashok Nagar, where he was born.

Born on July 2, 1954, Syed Mohammed Aziz-un-Nabi Aziz was lovingly called Munna by his close friends and family members. Also, popularly known as Aziz, he started his career as a singer at a restaurant called Ghalib in Kolkata, according to records. Inspired by Muhammad Rafi and wanting to do more, he moved to Mumbai in 1984 when he got a call from Anu Malik to sing for Amitabh Bachchan starrer Mard. The song was titled Mard Taangewala, which became a big hit.

 Apart from singing in films, he also held several stage shows at home and abroad, and was nominated twice for best male playback singer award.
The 64-year-old singer passed away in Mumbai’s Nanavati Hospital where he was admitted following a cardiac arrest. He reported sick when he landed in Mumbai airport after a show in Kolkata on Monday night and was taken to the hospital where the doctors said that he suffered a massive heart attack, according to reports.
