New Delhi:

The Centre is planning to speed up the Aadhaar enrolment process in Jammu and Kashmir so that people are benefitted by government schemes, according to reports. The process will accelerate once the bifurcation of the state is complete. The Centre had on August 5 announced abrogation of provisions of Article 370 and decided to bifurcate the state into Union territories - Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh - hours after Kashmir was placed under a total clampdown.

“Aadhaar is a successful tool for the transfer of subsidies and implementation of welfare schemes. The government is committed for development of J&K, and Aadhaar will be one of the key tools that will help the Centre in fulfilling its commitment,” Hindustan Times quoted officials on condition of anonymity as saying.

“An intensive campaign [for Aadhaar enrolment] is expected after October 31 and CSCs need no more than a week to launch it in the entire J&K. The purpose of the government is to ensure that every household in the Valley must get benefits of Central schemes such as Ujjwala yojana, HT reported.

Earlier, the Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill was passed from the Rajya Sabha. The Lok Sabha had on July 4 passed the Bill, with a voice vote, which seeks to amend the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016, the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002. Earlier today, the IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad moved the house to introduce the bill after opposition MPs D Raja, Binoy Viswam, Elmakaram Kareem and T Subbarammi Reddy argued against the March 2019 Aadhaar ordinance.
