All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has appealed to his supporters pray for a speedy recovery of his brother Akbaruddin.
Akbaruddin, a five-time MLA from Chandrayangutta, is currently undergoing treatment in London. Sources said Akbaruddin left for London during the first week of May and is expected to return in the last week of June or first week of July.
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy wished Akbaruddin a speedy recovery.
"Praying for the speedy recovery and good health of Akbaruddin Owaisiji," Jagan tweeted.
Akbaruddin, the floor leader of his party in the Legislative Assembly, has been suffering from certain health issues ever since the attack on him in 2011.
He was shot at and stabbed by a rival group in his Assembly constituency. He had sustained injuries at several places, including his abdomen.
He spent several days in the hospital and made a miraculous recovery. However, he needed frequent medical attention. People privy to the development said that Akbaruddin’s health has been deteriorating in recent years.
"Owaisi is a frequent visitor to London for his health check-up and treatment,” a source said.
Meanwhile, AIMIM said it will request the Telangana Assembly Speaker to grant the post of Leader of the Opposition to the party in the House.
AIMIM has seven MLAs and Akbaruddin Owaisi is the party’s leader in the House.
The development comes following the merger of 12 MLAs of the Congress party with the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) on Thursday.
With Speaker P. Srinivas Reddy recognising the merger of the Congress MLAs with the TRS, the strength of the Congress has come down to six in the 119-member Assembly.
Owaisi said in the 70-member Delhi Assembly, the BJP was given the LoP post though it had only three members.
