Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday chaired a high-level meeting to review the prevailing situation in the national capital after violence erupted in parts of Northeast Delhi over the amended Citizenship act. The meeting was attended by Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief, Home secretary and other top officials. National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, who has been given the charge to bring the Delhi violence under control, visited the office of DCP Northeast.
Amit Shah on Tuesday held his third meeting within 24 hours over violence in the Northeastern part of the national capital. The meeting was also attended by Indian Police Service (IPS) officer SN Srivastava, who was appointed as the special police commissioner on Tuesday.
Earlier on Tuesday, the home minister also chaired a meeting with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, Commissioner of Police Amulya Patnaik, Congress leader Subhash Chopra, BJP's Manoj Tiwari and Ramvir Bidhuri.
In the meeting, Shah had urged the leaders to rise above politics to tackle the situation, news agency ANI reported. The police, on the other hand, have appealed to the people of Delhi to ignore rumours and unverified messages being circulated on social media related to the violence. "Delhi Police is making all earnest efforts, including deployment of reinforcement and involving respectable citizens of the area, to restore the normalcy," they said in a statement tweeted from their official handle.
"Delhi Police has kept strict vigil on such mischievous elements and miscreants. Strict legal action will be taken against those who are found involved in these incidents. It is also urged that social media platforms should be used with responsibility. Public cooperation is solicited in maintaining peace," it added.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday said the Centre and the Delhi government were responsible for the deadly communal violence in the national capital and demanded that Home Minister Amit Shah should resign taking responsibility for it.
Addressing a press conference after chairing a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, she said there was a conspiracy behind the violence and tragic incidents in Delhi. "The conspiracy was witnessed during Delhi polls and BJP leaders gave hate speeches creating atmosphere of fear and hatred," she said.
The Centre, home minister and the Delhi government are responsible for the situation in the national capital, the Congress chief said. Union Home Minister Shah must take responsibility for the violence in Delhi and resign, she said.
Gandhi said the Delhi government and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal have also failed to maintain peace. The Congress president also hit out at BJP leader Kapil Mishra for making a statement that allegedly incited violence in the city.

The CWC has passed a resolution on the situation in the city, she said, adding that the CWC believes that the situation is grave and an urgent action is required.
Adequate security forces must be deployed to bring situation under control and peace committees must be formed in mohallas, Gandhi said, while reading out the CWC resolution on the violence in Delhi. The Delhi chief minister must be visible in the affected areas and stay in constant communication with the people, she said. The CWC urges people to reject politics of hate and do their best to heal rifts, Gandhi said quoting the resolution.
