Bengali actor-turned-politician Subhadra Mukherjee has resigned from the primary membership Bharatiya Janata Party in the aftermath of Delhi violence saying she couldn’t be in the party which is selective in taking action. "The atmosphere is filled with hate. No action is being taken against party leaders like Anurag Thakur and Kapil Mishra despite their hate speeches which caused a deterioration in the situation. How can I be in a party which is selective in taking action?” Mukherjee said.
The actor-turned-politicians, who joined the BJP in 2013, said she got associated with the party with a lot of ‘hopes and optimism’ but got disappointed after recent violence in Delhi which showed the "BJP was moving away from its ideology".
Popular Bengali actor, Subhadra Mukherjee, who joined the BJP in 2013, has resigned from the primary membership of the party expressing dismay over the "recent hate-filled situation" in the country. "I had joined the party with a lot of hope and optimism. But, the recent violence in Delhi, the growing atmosphere of hatred and violence, made me feel disturbed," Mukherjee told reporters.
"Why should brothers cut each other's throats in the name of religion? I was disturbed after hearing the news of deaths of over 40 people," Mukherjee, who has already sent in her resignation letter to BJP state unit president Dilip Ghosh, said.
Mukherjee said that she was in favour of the Citizenship Amendment Act passed by the Modi government but opposed to the way BJP has been promoting it.
"It has resulted in unrest across the country. Why should we all have to show papers after so many years into independent India to prove our citizenship?" Mukherjee was quoted as saying by IANS.
The actor said she did not want to be associated with "this brand of politics" where people can be judged by their religion and not as fellow humans.
