Bengaluru:

A day after storming to power, BS Yediyurappa government in Karnataka is planning to bring a no-confidence motion against Assembly Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar if he doesn’t vacate the post on his own. According to sources, the BJP government has already conveyed to Speaker to give up the post, which is usually held by a member of the ruling party.

“We will move the no-confidence motion against the Speaker if he himself does not resign,” news agency PTI quoted a BJP MLA on the condition of anonymity.

The ruling party MLA further said that they will wait for the Speaker to voluntarily step down from the post. “Our first agenda is to win the confidence motion and get the finance bill passed on Monday. We will wait and see whether the speaker steps down on his own,” the MLA added.

BJP state president BS Yediyurappa, who sworn in as the new chief minister on Friday, will prove majority in the Assembly on July 29. The MLA said that they will move a no-confidence motion against the Speaker after winning the floor test. "Once we win the confidence of the House, we will go ahead with moving no-confidence motion," he said.

In a sudden turn of events, the BJP led by BS Yediyurappa came to power in Karnataka on Friday, barely 24 hours after Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar disqualified three rebel MLAs, Ramesh Jarkiholi and Mahesh Kumathalli from Congress and independent MLA R Shankar for deserting the government.

The Speaker had even indicated that in a couple of days, he would take decision regarding rest of the MLAs including three from JD(S). The raft of resignations by the rebel MLAs had brought down the coalition government in Karnataka and put the BJP on the straddle.
