Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator Murlidhar Mohol was elected as the new Mayor of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Friday. Also, BJP’s Saraswati Shendge was elected as the new Deputy Mayor of Pune. The Mayor’s post had fallen vacant after incumbent Mukta Tilak of the BJP was elected as MLA from the Kasba Assembly constituency in Maharashtra.
It is to be noted that Murlidhar Mohol defeated the joint Congress-NCP candidate who was also supported by the Shiv Sena. Congress and the NCP had fielded Prakash Kadam as their candidate against Mohol. NCP’s Prakash Kadam is a corporator from Kothrud. However, despite the three parties coming together, Mohol won the election by a comfortable margin as the BJP enjoys a clear majority in the civic body.
On the other hand, in the election for the Deputy Mayor's post, Shendge defeated Congress corporator Chandbi Haji Nadaf. The BJP has 99 corporators in the 164-member Pune Municipal Corporation. According to a report of NDTV, Mohol got 97 votes, while Kadam bagged 59 votes. While five corporators remained absent, three corporators from the MNS remained neutral.
It is said that Mohol played a key role in state BJP chief Chandrakant Patil''s victory from the Kothrud constituency in Maharashtra Assembly elections.
It is worth mentioning here that in Pimpri Chichwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), BJP's Usha Dhore and Tushar Hinge were elected as the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively.
