JD(U) Lok Sabha MP from Valmiki Nagar and former Bihar minister Baidyanath Prasad Mahto died on Friday evening while undergoing treatment at the AIIMS in Delhi. He was 72. Mahto was on ventilator for a week. With the demise Mahto, total number of JD(U) member in the Lok Sabha has reduced to 15 from 16. Condoling his death, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday said Mahto was very popular in his constituency. His death has caused an irreparable loss to the state’s political circle and society as well.

Mahto won the 2009 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Valmiki Nagar constituency. Mahto had won the Valmiki Nagar seat by 3,54,616 votes. He had received a total of 6,02,660 votes. Congress candidate Shashwat Kedar, who came second, received 2,48,044 votes.

He was earlier elected three times to the Bihar Legislative Assembly from Nautan. He was also Minister of Rural Development Department between 2005 and 2008 in Bihar government.
