The Supreme Court has constituted a special bench for an urgent hearing on Monday regarding the felling of trees in Mumbai’s Aarey to set up a Metro car shed which is being opposed by green activists and a section of people, including residents. The apex court decided on Sunday to register as public interest litigation a letter addressed to Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi by a law student Rishav Ranjan seeking a stay on the cutting of trees. The letter sent to the CJI by Rishav Ranjan on behalf a student delegation on Sunday comes two days after the Bombay High Court refused to declare Aarey Colony a forest and declined to quash the Mumbai municipal corporation's decision to allow felling of over 2,600 trees in the green zone to set up a metro carshed.

Uttarakhand BJP serves notice to its Raipur MLA

The Uttarakhand BJP has served a notice to its MLA Umesh Sharma Kau after an audio clip surfaced on social media in which he can purportedly be heard asking for votes for an independent candidate pitted against BJP supported nominee in Panchayat elections.

Taking cognisance of the audio clip, Pradesh BJP general secretary Rajendra Bhandari served a notice to Kau on the direction of Pradesh party president Ajay Bhatt on Sunday, seeking an explanation from him in three days.

Aarey: Supreme Court Asks Maharashtra Government To Not Cut More Trees

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Maharashtra Government to not cut any more trees at Aarey Colony in Mumbai. Supreme Court also ordered release of anyone arrested in relation to this matter. The Green Bench of Supreme Court will now hear the matter on October 21. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for Maharashtra Government, assured the bench that no trees will be cut henceforth.

BJP Leader Ravindra Kharat, 4 Family Members Shot Dead In Jalgaon

A BJP corporator and four members of his family were shot dead at his residence in Maharashtra's Jalgaon district by three gunmen, police said. Police has arrested three persons in connection with the case so far. Ghaziabad: Prostitution Racket Busted After Raids On Spa Centres, 19 Arrested

Nineteen people, including nine women, were arrested in connection with an alleged prostitution racket from three spas. The woman kingpin of the racket was also arrested during the raid. All three centres were using WhatsApp for soliciting customers by sending photographs of the women, Assistant Superintendent of Police Keshav Kumar said. The sub-divisional magistrate of the city was also present during raid.

The Afghan Taliban has claimed that it has freed three Indian engineers held hostage by them in a prisoner exchange deal with United States. According to reports, the Indian hostages were released for securing the release of 11 Taliban members, including some high-ranking officials of the group. 10 workers hospitalised after gas leak at paper mill

Ten workers fell ill due to gas leak at a paper mill here, police said on Monday. The incident took place on Sunday evening, SHO of New Mandi police station Sanjiv Kumar said. The workers were rushed to a nearby hospital after they complained of irritation in eyes and breathlessness, police added.
