Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a high-level segment of the UN conference today in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. PM Narendra Modi will address the 14th Conference of Parties (COP) to United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). PM Modi will also lay out plans to combat threat to climate. UNCCD was adopted in Paris on June 17, 1994, and was ratified by 196 countries and the European Union. India ratified the UNCCD Convention in 1996.

Meghalaya Deputy Speaker Timothy D Shira on Monday announced that election to the Assembly speaker's post will be held on September 13. Candidates will have to file their nomination papers on September 10 and scrutiny will also be carried out on the same day, he said.

P Chidambaram's Message From Tihar: 'Why Was Only I Arrested? Have No Answer'






Former union minister P Chidambaram, who is in Tihar Jail in the INX Media case, on Monday said he has no answer to why he was arrested. In a tweet posted on his handle, he said he has no idea why only he was arrested and not any of the officers who had recommended granting Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to the INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday visited the residence of Ram Jethmalani to pay his last respects to the eminent jurist.


Jethmalani, 95, passed away at his official residence in New Delhi on Sunday, days ahead of his 96th birthday on September 14.


"PM @narendramodi paid tributes to late Shri Ram Jethmalani Ji at his residence. He expressed condolences to the family members of Shri Jethmalani," the Prime Minister's Office tweeted.

12 injured in group cash in Muzaffarnagar

At least twelve people, including three children, were injured in a clash between two groups of the same community over minor dispute at Rohana Kala village here, police said on Monday. The clash occurred on Sunday evening in which both the groups threw stones at each other, Station House Officer of Kotwali police station Anil Kaparvan said.

Opening Bell: Sensex Drops Over 150 Points, Bank, Auto Stocks Drag

Domestic equity benchmark BSE Sensex dropped over 150 points in early session on Monday, weighed down by losses in banking, auto and IT stocks amid unabated foreign fund outflow. The 30-share index was trading 147.20 points, or 0.40 per cent, lower at 36,834.57 at 0930 hours, while the broader Nifty rose 31 points, or 0.28 per cent, to 10,915.20.

BJD MLA fined for violating traffic rules

A JD(U) block president's son was found dead at his friend's residence in the state capital, police said on Sunday, with his family alleging he was killed by his friends.


Ayush Kumar, aka Saurav, 21, was the son of Vinod Mukhiya, who was elected unopposed for a second term as Rahui block president of JD(U) on Saturday in Nalanda district, said Patrakar Nagar police station SHO Manoj Kumar.
