New Delhi:

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati on Wednesday became the first leader to accept Amit Shah's challenge for a public debate on Citizenship Amendment Act. On Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had dared opposition leaders for a public discussion on the contentious law. Mayawati said her party accepts his challenge for a debate "at any forum and at any place."

“The government, disturbed by protests against the controversial CAA/NRC/NPR, by the entire country, especially the youth and women, has challenged the Opposition to debate on the matter. The BSP accepts the challenge to debate on it at any forum and at any place,” Mayawati tweeted.

Shah, addressing a rally in Lucknow on Tuesday, had dared Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and Mayawati for a discussion on the Act "in a public forum". Shah had also said that while the opposition was 'free to protest', the government won’t step back on the amended citizenship law.

Meanwhile, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi had dared Amit Shah to discuss the law with him instead of others. Addressing a rally in Karimnagar district on Tuesday night ahead of the municipal polls on January 25, the Hyderabad MP said the Home Minister called for a public debate on CAA with the opposition even as he asked Shah to debate with him on the legislation.
