CAA Protests: After Jamia, Delhi's Seelampur Turns Battlefield As Oppn Meets President | 10 Points

In a fresh violence against the Citizenship Amendment Act in New Delhi, angry protesters demanding scrapping of the law torched several motor bikes, pelted stones at police personnel and damaged buses and a police booth in Northeast Delhi's Seelampur area on Tuesday afternoon.

The police resorted to baton charge and fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters. Plumes of smoke billowed from at least two localities as the standoff continued for around one-and-a-half hours. The police said later the situation has been brought under control.

They said two bikes of traffic cops were burnt by the demonstrators, adding a police booth in the area was vandalised and CCTV cameras installed there were taken away by the mob. Some security personnel were also injured in the incident, police said.

Protests in Delhi against CAA: 10 Updates

1. The clashes erupted two days after violence broke out during a protest in the New Friends area in South Delhi near Jamia Millia Islamia. A large number of policemen were deployed as tension prevailed in Seelampur and adjoining areas following the violence.
2. The police said the protesters were marching from Seelampur towards Zaffrabad. Clashes erupted at Seelampur Chowk when the security personnel tried to stop the protesters from moving ahead.
3. Gates of seven metro stations were closed in the wake of the protest, and five of them were reopened after some time. Traffic was also diverted from the area.
4. Twenty-one people, including 12 policemen and six civilians, were injured in the clashes in Seelampur which continued for one-and-half hours, while five persons have been detained, according to police. Police said they used tear gas shells to disperse the mob but denied that there was any baton charge on protesters. 
5. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal appealed to Delhiites to maintain peace, saying violence cannot be tolerated in a civilised society. The Aam Aadmi Party and its Seelampur MLA Haji Ishraq urged the people to register their protest peacefully after the area witnessed violence.
6. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said there was nothing against minorities in the CAA and accused the opposition of engaging in a "false" campaign over the legislation. Speaking at India Economic Conclave, Shah said no action is being taken against students protesting against the CAA, which was passed by Parliament last week and has received Presidential assent.
7. Fresh protests broke out against the amended citizenship law in Seelampur's Brijpuri area on Tuesday night with people pelting stones on police personnel. The incident took place at around 8:30 pm, but was brought under control, they said.
8. On Sunday, scores of people, including Jamia students and policemen, were injured, four DTC buses were set afire and over 100 private vehicles were damaged when protesters opposing the amended Citizenship Act clashed with police near New Friends Colony. The police used batons and tear gas shells to disperse the protesters and entered the Jamia campus where several people were detained.
9. On Tuesday, a Delhi court Tuesday sent 10 people, arrested in connection with the protests against the CAA near Jamia Millia Islamia University, to judicial custody till December 31. The police had on Monday arrested them for their alleged involvement in the violence near Jamia Millia Islamia University, it had said, adding that none of them were students.
10. Actors Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub, Parineeti Chopra, Sidharth Malhotra, veteran screenwriter Javed Akhtar and filmmakers Vishal Bhardwaj and Anurag Kashyap among others expressed solidarity with the youth over Sunday's violence inside the campus.
