New Delhi:

The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) has hit back at Rahul Gandhi after the former Congress President refused to apologise for his ‘Rape In India’ remark. Speaking at the 'Bharat Bachao' rally, Rahul Gandhi said, "My name is Rahul Gandhi, not Rahul Savarkar; I will never apologise for speaking truth and nor will any Congressman do so."

Reacting to his comment, BJP leader GVL Narasimha Rao said, "Rahul Jinnah instead of Rahul Gandhi is a more appropriate name for him."

"The more appropriate name for you Rahul Gandhi is RAHUL JINNAH. Your Muslim appeasement politics and mindset makes you a worthy legatee of Mohammad Ali Jinnah, not Savarkar. #RahulJinnah," GVL Narasimha Rao wrote on Twitter.

BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra also attacked Gandhi over the comment. He tweeted, "Even if Rahul Gandhi takes 100 births he can't be Rahul Savarkar. Savarkar was 'Veer', patriot and had sacrificed. The language Rahul Gandhi uses for Article 370, air strike, surgical strike, CAB is Pakistan's language. He can't be 'Veer' or be at par with Savarkar."

"If he (Rahul Gandhi) wants a new name, then today onward BJP will call him by the name of 'Rahul thoda sharam kar'. He should actually have a little shame, a person who compares 'Make in India' to 'Rape in India' has crossed all limits of shame and dignity," he added.

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi reiterated his refusal to apologise for his "Rape in India" comment, insisting that he had only spoken the truth. The comment, made at an election rally Jharkhand, has triggered a massive political row over the last two days. "Narendra Modi had said 'Make in India' but nowadays wherever you look, it is 'Rape in India'," he had said.

It created an uproar in parliament, with BJP leaders interpreting his comment as a "call for rape" and demanding that he apologise. The party also formally complained to the Election Commission, seeking action against the Congress leader. Protests disrupted the proceedings in both houses of parliament on the penultimate day of the winter session.

"For the first time in history, a leader is giving a call that Indian women should be raped. Is this Rahul Gandhi's message to the people of the country? He should be punished," Union Minister Smriti Irani had said.

On Friday, Rahul Gandhi had declared that he would not apologise for his comments. "Let me clarify what I said. I said the PM keeps talking about 'Make In India'. So when one opens the newspaper one hoped that one would see news about it, but what do we see when we open the papers? We see so many cases of rapes," he told reporters outside parliament on Friday.
