CBI failed to find missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, files closure report

New Delhi:

The country’s premier probe agency the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has failed to trace Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmed, who went missing in October 2016 following a fight with some students allegedly affiliated to the ABVP, the student wing of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The CBI Monday filed its closure report in the case in the Patiala House Court after taking permission from the Delhi High Court. The court will now hear the matter on November 29.

Mother of Najeeb, Fatima Nafees, who had been fighting for justice for nearly two years, claimed that the closure report was filed under “political compulsions”.

"I am saddened because the CBI carried out a biased investigation and its sole objective was to shield those who assaulted my son before he went missing. I have been facing injustice right from the first day," the pained mother said.

Najeeb Ahmed, a student of MSc, went missing from the Mahi-Mandvi hostel of the JNU on October 15, 2016. A day before he went missing, Najeeb had a scuffle with a group of students who allegedly belonged to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

Najeeb’s mother and their lawyer claimed that it was a "political case" and there was a big "conspiracy behind his disappearance".

The lawyer had said that the agency didn’t interrogate the nine students who were named in the FIR filed by 18 students, who were eyewitnesses to the alleged assault on Najeeb.

The agency, however, reiterated that it had explored all the possible angles of the case and found out that no offence was committed against the missing student.
