CBI vs Kolkata Police: Supreme Court says matter will be heard tomorrow

New Delhi:

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday moved the Supreme Court seeking directions to Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar to cooperate with it in the investigation of the Saradha chit fund scam. Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said that the matter will be heard on Tuesday.

The CBI in its petition said that Rajeev Kumar was summoned multiple times but he failed to cooperate and also created hurdles in the investigation. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta representing the CBI submitted before the Supreme Court said, “Our team was arrested and kept in alleged custody. Kolkata Police Commissioner should immediately surrender." The central probe agency also alleged the destruction of electronic evidence related to Saradha chit fund scam. The CBI had submitted before the top court that Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar, a 'potential accused' should surrender evidence.

The Chief Justice of India said, "If the CBI brings a single piece of evidence or any material to show that any authority in WB or any police officer is engaged in tampering with chit fund scam, we will come down so heavily on them that they will regret it. All material, evidence has to be placed by means of affidavit.”

The solicitor general also alleged that senior policemen in uniform sat on dharna with political leaders in Kolkata last night.

The Kolkata Police had on Sunday detained the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team which had reached the house of Commissioner Rajeev Kumar to question him in connection with Rose Valley and Saradha ponzi scams. The team was earlier denied entry by the cops into the house of Kolkata Police chief. The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has also reached Kumar's house. According to our sources, the CBI team is in Shakespeare police station under whose aegis commissioner's house comes. The CBI is trying to locate Kolkata police chief Rajeev Kumar to question him in connection with Rose Valley and Saradha ponzi scams and it might arrest him as the last resort, officials said. The IPS officer, who led a Special Investigation Team of West Bengal Police probing the scams, has to be questioned regarding missing documents and files but he is not responding to notices to appear before the agency, they said.
