Central govt to Supreme Court: Cows should get Aadhaar like Unique Identification Number

In order to offer better protection to cows and put an end to cattle smuggling esp. across the India-Bangladesh border, the central government on Monday proposed to the Supreme Court that each cow and its progeny across the country should be provided an Aadhaar-like Unique Identification Number.

Moreover, the government has recommended that cattle should be provided special care when they surpass the age of milking along with stressing on beginning a scheme for distressed farmers.

The government said that the UID number would be helpful in tracking cattle. Moreover, it asserted that the UID number should have age, breed, sex, lactation, height, body, color, horn type, tail switch and special marks details of the animal. As per reports, the animal husbandry department had assigned technicians to affix a tag with a 12-digit unique identification number inside the ear of cows.

Further, reports claim that nearly one lakh technicians have been armed with 50,000 tablets. Their mission will focus on affixing a polyurethane tag on the ears of the cattle with a tag applicator.

Once the tag is fixed, the technician can then use a tablet to update the number in an online database apart from providing the cattle owner with an "animal health card" recording the UID number, owner's details, status of periodic deworming and vaccinations of the animal as well as breeding details.

It will be an excellent way to  track the cattle as relevant details will be easily available.The recommendations have been made amidst reports of various incidents over cow-vigilantism from all over the contry. Emphasising on the prohibition of smuggling animals across Bangladesh via the Indo-Bangla border, the Centre said that active support and cooperation should be sought from the public.
