Hyderabad:

East Godavari Police has issued charge memos to two policemen for not properly handling the case of a man who allegedly cheated people while claiming to be a relative of Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister.

District SP K Ravi Prakash issued the charge memos to Peddapuram circle inspector Sridhar Babu and sub-inspector B Siva Krishna late last night for not properly dealing with the case involving the ‘cheat’, named Avinash, and failing to get information about him.

Avinash also claimed to be a relative of Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister N Chinna Rajappa.

Kakinada SC/ST cell’s DSP has been deputed to conduct an inquiry against the two policemen, Prakash said today.

The district police had booked Avinash on the basis of a video footage aired by some news channels yesterday purportedly showing him beating up an unidentified man.

The Peddapuram police has registered offences against Avinash, who hails from Telangana’s Khammam district, under various IPC sections, including 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324, 342 (wrongful confinement), 506 (criminal intimidation) read with 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), the SP said.

Six police teams have been formed and a search is on for him in AP, Telangana and other states also, he said.

The district police had yesterday swung into action to trace Avinash, who claimed to be a relative of the DyCM, even as Andhra Pradesh Human Rights Commission issued notice to top officials in this regard.

The DyCM said he did not know Avinash and ordered stringent action against him.

Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports that a man named Avinash was doing “mischief” by allegedly collecting lakhs of rupees from innocent persons by promising them jobs in government and attacking those who confronted him, the APHRC had asked the chief secretary, DGP and other officials to file a report by April 6.

As per reports, the East Godavari police had taken Avinash into custody on February 27, but later let him off due to “political pressure.”

Avinash, who claimed to be holding cabinet rank and moved in a posh car with a VIP beacon atop it, allegedly cheated many people, educational institutions and NGOs by collecting huge amounts of money from them, police said.

A corporate school in Peddapuram town had yesterday approached police alleging that a person, who identified himself as Avinash, had threatened them of severe consequences saying their school was lacking in basic amenities.

Meanwhile, a woman lodged a police complaint against Avinash here last night for allegedly taking money from her while promising development in the area.
