Former Union minister Swami Chinmayanand, who was arrested in connection with a sexual assault case filed by a postgraduate student, has been admitted to the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) in Lucknow for treatment on Monday.

According to jail sources, doctors in Shahjahanpur had earlier referred the BJP leader to Lucknow for angiography in view of his health condition. The former union minister has been admitted to the SGPGI in Lucknow, Jail Superintendent Rakesh Kumar said.

On Sunday, Kumar told PTI that Chinmayanand's advocate had submitted an application to the CJM court on September 20, urging it to allow the "shifting of the leader to the KGMU, Lucknow, for treatment". The former Union minister was arrested by the SIT on last Friday and sent to 14-day judicial custody.

Meanwhile, the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is probing the case, submitted a status report in the Allahabad High Court this afternoon. The bench comprising Justices Manoj Mishra and Manju Rani Chauhan expressed its satisfaction over the report and further refused to hear a petition filed by the student seeking a stay on her arrest.

In her plea, the student said it has no jurisdiction to pass the order. She and three of her friends were booked by the SIT on charges of causing disappearance of evidence. The court, however, said, "If victim wants any relief in this regard, she may file a fresh petition before an appropriate bench".

The High Court has fixed the matter for further hearing on October 22.
