Congress Rajya Sabha MP From Karnataka KC Ramamurthy Resigns: Sources

New Delhi:

KC Ramamurthy, Congress Rajya Sabha MP from Karnataka on Wednesday submitted his resignation to the Vice President Secretariat, reported news agency ANI citing sources. His resignation has also been accepted by House Chairman M Venkaiah Nadu, the agency said. Like his many other colleagues, Ramamurthy is also likely to join the ruling BJP. The Congress, India's oldest political party, is going through tough times with the meltdown in several states after party president Rahul Gandhi’s resignation.

In the recent past, Bhubneshwar Kalita and Sanjay Singh, both from the Congress, had resigned from the upper house. Several leaders from states like Goa, Maharashtra and Haryana have deserted the party in the past few months. In Karnataka, the Congress-JDS government collapsed after several party MLAs switched their loyalty.

Earlier in August this year, Bhubaneshwar Kalita, former Congress chief whip in Rajya Sabha, had joined the ruling BJP after quitting the Congress. Kalita had cited the Congress party's stand on the government's decisions on Jammu and Kashmir.
The resignation of Kalita, whose term in Rajya Sabha was till April 9, 2020, had come after another Congress Rajya Sabha member and his colleague Sanjay Singh, a member of the erstwhile Amethi royal family, quit the party and went into the saffron fold.
