On the 43rd anniversary of the imposition of Emergency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday slammed the Congress for spreading “illusionary fear” about the Constitution, Dalits and minorities facing danger in the country under BJP-led NDA government.
“The people who trampled upon the constitution, jailed the country's democracy, are today spreading illusionary fear that Modi will interfere in the constitution,” said Modi while addressing a meeting organised by the BJP to observe the Emergency anniversary.
Modi said that the Emergency imposed in 1975 by then prime minister Indira Gandhi was a black spot on India’s history and the black day should be observed to protect the Constitution.
“Emergency is a black spot on the golden history of the nation. Observing black day today is not just to criticise the Congress for its sin of imposing Emergency but also to create an awareness for the protection of Constitution and democracy,” Modi said.
Modi went full throttle and accused the Congress party of turning the country into a jail by imposing Emergency for personal interests.
“For selfish interests, Congress turned the country into a jail by imprisoning opposition leaders. For them, the country and democracy have no value. Instead of (Indira Gandhi) quitting as PM after the court verdict, Emergency was imposed. How can these people talk about safeguarding the Constitution,” he said.
While Modi took on the Congress for Emergency declared 43 years ago, rebel BJP leader and former finance minister Yashwant Sinha accused the ruling regime of imposing an “undeclared Emergency” in the country.
“There is an "undeclared Emergency" in the country which is more dangerous than the one declared by the Indira Gandhi government in 1975,” Sinha said while addressing an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) rally in Varanasi over the phone.
Another top Rajasthan BJP leader Ghanshyam Tiwari went a step ahead and quit the party on Monday citing "undeclared Emergency" in the country under Modi regime.
