Addressing his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday apologised for taking 'harsh steps' against coronavirus, which have caused difficulties to people, especially the poor. However, PM Modi added that the battle against COVID-19 is a tough one and it did require such harsh decisions. The PM also appealed to people not to violate nationwide lockdown imposed to fight against COVID-19 pandemic and follow the norms. He said that the lockdown was for the safety of each individual and his or her family members, and cautioned that it would be difficult to control once the deadly virus spreads. Earlier, in an address to the nation, PM Modi had announced a nationwide lockdown to combat the outbreak of coronavirus.

"I apologize for taking these harsh steps which have caused difficulties in your lives, especially the poor people. I know some of you would be angry with me also. But these tough measures were needed to win this battle", PM said.

PM Modi, who was addressing the 63rd edition of 'Mann ki Baat' programme, also hailed medical staff and doctors for their efforts to curb the spread of coronavirus.

"There are many soldiers who are fighting coronavirus, not from their homes but from outside their homes. These are our front line soldiers-especially our brothers and sisters on duty as nurses, doctors and paramedical staff", PM Modi said.

The prime minister said, "Acharya Charak had said that one who serves patients without desiring any material gain, is the best doctor. I salute every nurse today, you all are working with incomparable dedication."

The PM added, "I understand that no one wants to break rules deliberately, but there are some people who are doing so. To them, I will say that if they don't follow this lockdown, it will be difficult to protect ourselves from the danger of coronavirus."

He also said that he was hurt as some people have been misbehaving with those who are being advised home quarantine. PM Modi stressed on the need of being sensitive and understanding as he appealed to, 'increase social distancing but reduce emotional distancing.'
