India entered lockdown mode to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus outbreak as train, metro and long-distance bus services were closed with only essential services allowed to operate in 80 districts and 13 states till March 31. The deadly novel coronavirus outbreak aka COVID-19 has led to seven documented deaths in the country so far. According to ICMR, the total number of positive cases stood at 360 on Sunday evening. However, IMCR puts the total number of cases at 396.

On Sunday, India observed a 14-hour Janata Curfew as an effort to break the coronavirus spread chain. In the evening, government extended the lockdown in 80 districts, including big cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai, which have seen confirmed cases of the COVID-19 disease. Apart from these districts 13 states have also announced complete lockdowns. They are Maharashtra, Kerala, Haryana, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Punjab, Delhi, Nagaland, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand and Rajasthan.

More than 13,000 people have now died from COVID-19 in the world so far. An estimated 92,000 of the 304,500 people who contracted the disease globally have recovered. (With Agency Inputs)

The Supreme Court Sunday decided to restrict its functioning and hear the matters on Monday only in one court through video conference. In a circular issued late Sunday evening, the top court cancelled the scheduled hearing in courts 2, 8 and 14 and said that from Wednesday only one bench of two judges will take up for hearing in only urgent matters through video conference.

The World Health Organisation's top emergency expert said that only lockdowns are not enough to end the novel coronavirus outbreak. He said that countries can't simply lock down their societies to defeat coronavirus adding that public health measures are needed to avoid a resurgence of the virus later.


According to Mike Ryan, the best way to curb the coronavirus outbreak was to couple restrictions with rigorous measures to test every possible suspect. He gave the examples of China, Singapore and South Korea who have followed this strategy to fight the spread of the deadly virus. 

The Budget Session of Parliament is likely to be adjourned sine die on Monday after the passage of the Finance Bill in both Houses, sources said on Sunday.

China reported no new local cases of the deadly coronavirus on Monday, but confirmed another 39 infections brought in from overseas. However, nine more people died on Sunday, the National Health Commission said.

Italy announced 651 deaths on Sunday with total cumulative number of infected cases reaching 59,138 and deaths 5,476.

Three more people with COVID-19 died on Sunday, taking the overall toll in India to seven. A 63-year-old from Mumbai, a 38-year-old in Patna, Bihar, and a 69-year-old in Surat died on Sunday. Delhi, Karnataka and Punjab have also reported one death each so far.

According to Indian Council of Medical Research, the total number of coronavirus cases in India has jumped to 396 with 81 new cases being reported on Sunday. This is the biggest single-day increase till now.
