Coronavirus: Over 25,500 Linked To Tablighi Jamaat Event Quarantined, 5 Villages In Haryana Sealed

Over 25,500 local workers of the Islamic missionary group Tablighi Jamaat and people who came in contact with them have been quarantined, the government said on Monday. The event is considered a hotspot for the spread of novel coronavirus in India with at least 1,445 out of total 4,067 positive COVID-19 cases in country being linked to the event in Delhi's west Nizamuddin area last month.

According to a senior Union Home Ministry official, five villages in Haryana have also been sealed and the residents quarantined as members of this Islamic organisation had stayed there. During the daily briefing on COVID-19, MHA Joint Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava also told reporters that 1,750 foreign-based members of the Jamaat, out of the total 2,083, have been blacklisted till now.

She added that Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla has written to all states and Union Territories asking them to ensure that the supply chain of medical oxygen, critical for treatment of COVID-19 affected people, should go on smoothly while following norms of social distancing.

Meanwhile, 693 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total number to 4067 in India. The total number of deaths stands at 109. Lav Aggarwal, Joint Secretary in Union Health Ministry, said that 76 per cent cases have been reported in males while 24 per cent in females. According to the ministry, there are 3,666 active COVID-19 cases out of which 292 have been cured and discharged. 63 per cent of the deaths have been reported among people over 60 years age, 30 per cent in age bracket of 40 to 60 years and 7 per cent victims were below 40 years age, said Aggarwal.
