New Delhi:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has put South Odisha and coastal Andhra Pradesh on high alert as the cyclone storm 'Daye' is set to hit the region in the next few hours Friday. As per the weather department, the deep depression which earlier formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal is now moving with a speed of 23 km per hour towards Odisha and adjoining north Andhra Pradesh coast close to Gopalpur region.

'Daye' has now intensified into a deep depression and lay centred at about 130 km southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha, the weather department said in its latest bulletin alert. The depression is expected to continue to move towards west-northwestwards and weaken gradually during the next six hours.

"It (the depression) is very likely to move west-northwestwards. It will cross south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts between Kalingapatnam and Puri close to Gopalpur around midnight as a cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 60 km/h to 70 km/h, gusting to 80 km/h," Mritunjay Mohapatra, IMD Additional Director General, said.

Meanwhile, parts of Odisha's Malkangiri district witnessed heavy rain ahead of the cyclonic storm 'Daye', leaving some areas waterlogged. Two shutters of Upper Kolab dam in Koraput have been opened following heavy rainfall due to cyclone 'Daye'.

In wake of this grave situation, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik has sanctioned gratuitous relief of Rs 60 a day per person&Rs 45/per day for children below 12 for seven days.

A storm surge of about 0.5 meters above astronomical tides likely to inundate the low lying area of Gajapati, Ganjam, Khurda, Puri districts of Odisha in next 3 hours. Fishermen are advised not to venture into northwest Bay of Bengal and off Odisha coast during next 24 hours.

Besides, heavy rain, accompanied by gusty winds is expected to lash different parts of Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Telangana and Madhya Pradesh.

Wind Warning:

Gale wind speed reaching 60-70 km/h gusting to 80 km/h is very likely along and off south Odisha and adjoining north Andhra Pradesh Coasts and over northwest Bay of Bengal during next 03 hours and very likely to decrease thereafter.

Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 km/h gusting to 60 km/h is very likely along & off West Bengal during next 12 hours.

Sea Condition:

State of the sea will be high over the northwest Bay of Bengal and along & off south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh Coasts during next 03 hours and very rough during subsequent 06 hours.

Damage Expected over districts of Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam of Andhra Pradesh, Gajapati, Ganjam, Khurda, Nayagarh and Puri districts of Odisha :

Damage to thatched huts; Minor damage to power and communication lines due to the breaking of branches and Major damage to Kutcha and minor damage to Pucca roads. Some damage to paddy crops, banana, papaya trees and orchards. Seawater inundation in low lying areas after erosion of Kutcha embankments.

Action Suggested:

Total suspension of fishing operations, Fishermen are advised not to venture into northwest Bay of Bengal and along & off Odisha, West Bengal and north Andhra Pradesh Coasts during next 12 hours.

Here is how to stay safe during the cyclone DAYE:

Turn on your TV/radio.

You’ll get the latest weather updates and emergency instructions from All India Radio (AIR) and other local sources.

If it’s safe, secure the outside of your home and any items that could blow away.

They may become a safety hazard.

Know where to find higher ground on foot within 15 minutes.

You may need to leave quickly to escape rising waters.

Prepare or restock your emergency supply kit.

Include a charged cell phone, torch, radio, batteries, matches, candles, food, water, can opener, knife, and first aid supplies.

During cyclone DAYE:

Walk only where floodwaters aren’t moving.

Use a stick to check the depth of the water and firmness of the ground in front of you.

If there’s a chance of flash flooding, move immediately to higher ground.

Flash floods are a leading cause of weather-related deaths.

The IMD will publish its next bulletin later in the day. The alert will be activated for the next 20 hours, the weather department said.
