Cyclone Kyarr, which was classified as an “extremely severe cyclonic storm”, is the first Super Cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea in the last 12 years. Cyclone Kyarr, which transformed into a severe cyclonic storm on Saturday, is now moving west-northwestwards and is likely to hit the Oman coast by October 31. According to the latest bulletin of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the intensity of the supercyclone is likely to weaken after October 28 i.e. today.
According to the IMD forecast, it is likely to continue its movement west-northwestwards towards Oman coast during the next five days. The cyclone is likely to maintain the intensity of a Super Cyclonic storm till Monday. "It will weaken gradually after October 28," said IMD.
IMD Goa official Rahul M said, "Very severe cyclone Kyarr has further intensified into the Super Cyclone."
Meanwhile, Skymet Weather said, "At present, the system lays centered near latitude 17.0°N and longitude 68.2°E over east-central Arabia Sea, about 540 km West-southwest of Mumbai and 1500 km east of Salalah (Oman)."
On the other hand, World Cyclone Warning Center asserted that the Cyclone Kyarr has continued to rapidly intensify and has now become only the second Category 5 on record in the Arabian Sea.
The significant reduction in rainfall has been witnessed in the past 24 hours over Goa, Konkan and Karnataka coasts, as well as the eastern and northeastern parts of India. However, central, eastern and western parts of India are likely to witness rains and thunderstorms in the next 1-2 days.
The weather forecasting agency said, "On October 31, the isolated places over Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, and Shivamogga districts of south interior Karnataka may receive heavy rainfall." IMD has also predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, and Lakshadweep.

In the wake of Cyclone Kyarr, the Indian Coast Guard has so far rescued 19 fishermen and escorted over 2100 fishing boats to safety at various ports on the west coast. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea till Tuesday.
