New Delhi:

A 24-year-old youth was killed today and his friend was critically injured after over half-a dozen car-borne men opened indiscriminate fire on them near Qutub Minar in south Delhi.

The deceased has been identified as Sonu Sejwal who worked in a five star hotel in central Delhi, while his friend Sandeep was fighting for life at a city hospital, police said, adding both of them lived in nearby Lado Sarai area.

The attack took place around 1:40 PM when Sonu and Sandeep, a property dealer in South Delhi, were sitting with some friends and enjoying tea near Qutub Minar in Mehrauli area.

“Around six to eight men arrived at the scene in two cars and almost instantly opened fire, in which Sonu and Sandeep sustained bullet injuries while others ran for cover. The assailants then fled the scene. Someone called police following which those injured were rushed to AIIMS,” said a senior police official.

Sonu was shot twice in the chest while Sandeep sustained a bullet injury in his abdomen. Sonu was declared brought dead while his friend is under treatment and remains to be critical, he added.

Initial investigation has indicated that the attack took place over some financial matter. It could also have been a case of mistaken identity, sources said.

Sandeep is property dealer and we are checking with his associates and family whether there was any monetary dispute with anyone, said the official.

A case under sections 302 (murder), Arms Act and 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC was registered against unknown persons immediately at Mehrauli police station.

The crime and forensic teams picked circumstantial evidence from the spot. Several teams have been formed to crack the case and CCTV footage from the nearby area is being scanned for further inputs.

Sources also said one man has been detained for questioning in this connection by the police while some others have also being identified and raids are being conducted to nab them.
