New Delhi:

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Sunday confirmed that Rahul Gandhi is going to be re-elected as the party president. In an exclusive chat with News Nation, Tharoor was asked about the rumours that Rahul Gandhi will soon takeover her mother Sonia Gandhi as Congress chief, a post he relinquished after the poor show in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. "I believe Rahul Gandhi is going to be the Congress president," Tharoor said.

Recently, Congress general secretary in-charge of organisation KC Venugopal had also said hinted at Rahul Gandhi’s return as Congress chief. Venugopal said that Gandhi’s decision to quit was an emotional one and that he will soon listen to the repeated pleas of party workers and return as Congress president.

According to reports, the Congress party is planning an extended session of AICC in January 2020 where Rahul Gandhi will be unanimously elected as the party president. A report published in the Hindustan Times said that Rahul Gandhi has mellowed a bit now after initial reluctance as he wanted new president from non-Gandhi family.

Congress party's mega 'Bharat Bachao' rally on Saturday was also seen by many as an attempt to re-launch Rahul Gandhi in an avatar of a more agressive and serious politician. The rally was attended by nearly 50 thousand people and top Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh and Priyanka Gandhi were also present.

After Congress party’s abysmal show in 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi had resigned as party president despite repeated requests from senior leaders and party workers. The Congress had won only 52 seats in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, just 8 more than its 2014 tally. After months of confusion, his mother Sonia Gandhi took over the post as interim president.
