The agency has been facing a leadership and credibility crisis with two of its most senior officers – CBI Director Alok Verma and his deputy, Special Director Rakesh Asthana accusing each other of corruption.
Both Verma and Asthana had been divested of their powers and sent on indefinite leaves by the government after they traded allegations of bribery and wrongdoings.
Earlier in the day, CBI director Alok Verma appeared before the Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) for the second consecutive day in connection with the inquiry into the allegations of bribery levelled against him by his deputy Rakesh Asthana.
