New Delhi:

Former BJP MP and senior journalist Ashwini Kumar Chopra on Saturday passed away at the age of 62. Ashwini Kumar Chopra was suffering from cancer and breathed his last at a private hospital in Haryana’s Gurugram.

Ashwini Kumar Chopra was born on June 11, 1956 and is survived with three children and wife. Born in Punjab’s Jalandhar, Ashwini Kumar Chopra got elected from Karnal Parliamentary constituency in 2014. He then represented the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In his teenage years, Ashwini Kumar Chopra, 62, was a promising leg spinner sharing the stage with the likes of former India greats Erapalli Prasanna and Bishan Singh Bedi. Chopra, or Ashwini Minna as he was known, was part of the Rest of India squad that took on a mighty Bombay side in the 1975- 76 Irani Cup. It was in this game that the leg spinner scalped his maiden first-class wicket — Sunil Gavaskar.

Before long, however, Chopra, who played Ranji Trophy for Punjab between the 1975–76 and 1979-80 seasons, gave up the sport to be a part of the family business — his family ran the Hind Samachar group of newspapers that published the hugely popular Hindi daily Punjab Kesari.
