Gandhi Jayanti 2019: India is remembering Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary on Wednesday. President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat on his 150th birth anniversary. Congress president Sonia Gandhi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, BJP veteran L K Advani, Union ministers Piyush Goyal and Hardeep Singh Puri, and BJP working president J P Nadda were among those who paid floral tributes to the father of the nation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will declare India open defecation free to mark the sesquicentennial year of Gandhi's birth anniversary. On Gandhi Jayanti, PM Modi will also visit the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad while several other events will be organised in Gujarat, the home state of Gandhi and other parts of the country. PM Modi is also scheduled to launch a campaign against use of single-use plastic on October 2 in an attempt to make sure that India is devoid of single-use plastic by 2022.

BJP president Amit Shah kicked-off a four-month-long exercise on Wednesday with its leaders across the country undertaking foot marches and addressing public events to mark his 150th birth anniversary. The Congress launched a counter-drive with its president Sonia Gandhi taking a swipe at the Modi government, saying the Mahatma would have been pained by what has happened in India over the last few years.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday led a 'padyatra' with a large number of party workers following him to Mahatma Gandhi's memorial Rajghat. The 'Gandhi Sandesh Yatra' on Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary began from the Delhi Congress office Rajiv Bhavan at Deendayal Upadhyay Marg and headed to Rajghat, about three kilometres away, with enthusiastic party workers waving flags and chanting the slogan 'Mahatma Gandhi Amar Rahein'.

In a short video on Gandhi, Modi said his message of peace is still relevant to the world community. The prime minister also referred to the seven perversions Gandhi had cautioned people about. These are:  wealth without work, pleasure without conscience, knowledge without character, visit without ethics, science without humanity, religion without sacrifice and politics without principles.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive at the Ahmedabad airport around 6 pm, and will be greeted by BJP workers. He will then visit the Sabarmati Ashram to pay tributes to the Father of the Nation. He will then visit the Sabarmati Riverfront, where he will declare the country open defecation-free (ODF) in the presence of over 20,000 village heads. People associated with Gandhian institutions, high court judges, Padma awardees, students, educationists and village-level sanitation workers have been invited for the function.

BJP president Amit Shah will flag off the party's nationwide "Gandhi Sankalp Yatra" on Wednesday, with its leaders, including Union ministers, scheduled to start the four-month drive from different parts of the country. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP working president J P Nadda and Union ministers  Prakash Javadekar and Piyush Goyal will attend 'sankalp yatra' at different places in the national capital. Many ministers will observe it in different states and Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan will undertake a foot march in Bhubaneswar in Odisha. The party had earlier said that its 3,229 MPs, MLAs, other elected representatives and office-bearers will join the yatra.

Congress will mark Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary on Wednesday by organising 'padayatras' across the country. The programme will be undertaken by the AICC in Delhi and by the PCCs in their state capitals. It will be followed by district and block Congress committees across the country. Senior Congress leaders and workers will assemble at 9:30 am at the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee office at DDU Marg and will then walk towards Rajghat. Congress chief Sonia Gandhi will administer the oath to leaders and workers to redeem 'Gandhi, Gandhism and Gandhi's India'. Rahul Gandhi will join the 'padayatra' in Delhi. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is likely to participate in the foot march in Lucknow to commemorate the birth anniversary.

The Gandhi Jayanti celebrations are turning out to be a game of one-upmanship between the Congress and the BJP as both are organising foot marches across the country in their bid to cash in on his legacy.
