New Delhi:

A Gandhi statue was found vandalised at Sri Gandhi Inter College in Uttar Pradesh's Jalaun, police said on Friday. An FIR has been registered against unidentified persons after the matter was reported by the Principal of the Gandhi Inter College, Orai, Ravi Kumar, on Friday morning, police said. Locals and political parties reached the spot and protested against the vandalism demanding immediate action in the matter. 

Further, a metal mesh was erected around the statue after it was repaied in the presence of police, TOI reports.

According to Congress District president Shyam Sunder,  the statue was unveiled by former prime minister Indira Gandhi.  Demanding the installation of a new statue, he added that a desecrated statue is replaced not repaired. "We will stage a dharna (sit-in) till a new statue is installed," PTI quotes him as saying.

In a similar incident, a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was found vandalised inside the premises of a government-run school in Odisha’s Balasore town. A room christened ‘Bapuji Kakhya’ in the school as a mark of honour to the ‘father of the nation’ was also found ransacked, with cigarette butts and empty liquor bottles strewn around, a police officer said.
