With wide range of programmes, including the historic address to more than 50,000 Indian Americans coming up in his week-long US visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the energy capital on Saturday afternoon. Soon after landing in Houston, he tweeted, “Howdy Houston”. PM Modi added, “It’s a bright afternoon here in Houston. Looking forward to a wide range of programmes in this dynamic and energetic city today and tomorrow.”

India’s Ambassador to the US, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, and his American counterpart Ken Juster received prime minister at the airport.

Later in the day, PM Modi met CEOs from the energy sector on the first day of his US visit. India’s energy independence is one of the major goals that Modi has set for himself.

US President Donald Trump will also join PM Modi in the ‘Howdy Modi’ event in which he will address more than 50,000 Indian Americans. PM Modi will fly to New York from Houston, where he is scheduled to meet President Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Earlier, Tulsi Gabbard, who is also a Democratic presidential aspirant, greeted the prime minister on Twitter. “Indian PM Narendra Modi has just arrived in Houston. And we cannot wait to say hello. Are you ready Houston?” she tweeted.

The event to be held at the NRG football stadium in Houston is set to be the largest gathering ever for an elected foreign leader visiting the US, other than the Pope.
