IMD issues cyclone alert for Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu

Heavy Rains May Lash Parts Of Andhra Pradesh And Tamil Nadu As It Is Likely That The Depression Over Southwest Bay Of Bengal May Intensify Into A Cyclone, According To MET Office Forecast, The India Meteorological Department Said On Tuesday Evening.

Heavy rains may lash parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu as it is likely that the depression over southwest Bay of Bengal may intensify into a cyclone, according to MET office forecast, the India Meteorological Department said on Tuesday evening. India Meteorological Department said on Tuesday that moving north-northwest, the depression lay centred about 120 km south by southeast of Chennai.

"The system is likely to move north northwestwards towards north Tamil Nadu, south Andhra Pradesh coast and further intensify into a deep depression during next 24 hours. The system is likely to be close to Chennai during morning hours of 18 May. It will move northwards and then recurve north northeastwards and may intensify into a cyclonic storm during subsequent 24 hours," it said.

Strong winds with speed of 50 to 60 km per hour are expected along and off south and north coastal Andhra. During the next 24 hours, heavy rains will continue to lash Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the weather department said on Wednesday.

Over the next 48 hours, it is expected to move north-northeastwards and intensify into a deep depression and further into a cyclonic storm. During the next 24 hours, rains are also predicted over south coastal and interior Tamil Nadu. Also, during the next 48 hours, heavy rainfall is predicted over south Andhra Pradesh coast.

Heavy rain is also predicted at isolated places in the districts of Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Chittoor, Anantapur, Kadapa and Kurnool of Rayalaseema on Thursday and Friday.
