In Akhilesh Yadav vs Yogi Adityanath, ‘bombs’ at Allahabad University intensify ‘detention’ drama

New Delhi:

The detention drama at the Lucknow Airport has snowballed into a major controversy. After being ‘detained’ by the Yogi Adityanath government, former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav said that, “now when the event (at Allahabad University) is round the corner, three bombs were exploded where the stage was set. Neither government nor administration took any action against the ones who did it. In democracy, it never happens that government helps in throwing of bombs when event is about to take place.” Yadav also alleged that he was stopped from leaving for Prayagraj despite giving a prior noice. The SP chief said that his party had given the notice to the university administration on December 27 last year.

Earlier in the day, Yadav took to Twitter on Tuesday to complain about the Uttar Pradesh government. In his tweet, Yadav claimed that the Yogi Adityanath government ‘stopped’ him at Lucknow Airport. In another tweet, he said that he was being ‘detained’ at the airport. The former chief minister was scheduled to attend a student’s oath-taking ceremony later in the day. "The government is so afraid of oath ceremony of a student leader that it is stopping me at the airport to prevent me from visiting Allahabad," Yadav said in Hindi on Twitter. He tweeted photographs in which he was seen talking to police officers inside the airport. “The BJP knows that youth of our great country will not tolerate this injustice anymore,” Yadav said in another tweet.

Yadav was scheduled to attend an oath-taking ceremony at Allahabad University. When asked, the airport director AK Sharma said, "He had no such information". Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, however, maintained that the step was taken due to law and order situation. The Chief Minister claimed that the situation would have deteriorated had Yadav visited the university campus. “SP should refrain from its anarchist activities. Allahabad University requested that Akhilesh Yadav’s visit may create law & order problem because of the dispute between student organisations. Hence the government took this step,” Yogi was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati attacked the Yogi government over the incident. “Extremely condemnable that Samajwadi Party President and former UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav was stopped at Lucknow airport today in order to prevent him from attending programme in Allahabad. This is anti-democratic and an example of total dictatorship of BJP government,” Mayawati tweeted.
